Well executed Mayor’s Awards brought out Boise’s cultural community

Last night’s Mayor’s Awards for Excellence in Arts and History celebrated some of Boise’s most talented and dedicated citizens, people who work to make Boise a culturally vibrant and interesting place to live.

The setting on the outdoor plaza of the Boise Corp. building at Jefferson and 12th streets turned out to be  ideal. Cool breezes, delicious food from Open Table Catering, glittering reflections from Ray King’s dichroic glass sculpture “AquA,” and just the right mix of creative communities converging — performing and visual arts to the development and  education arenas — all the people you want to have in the same place at least twice each year.

Quotes of the night:”Tonight shows what you need to be successful in Boise: Work hard, be humble, be gracious,” — Ryan Peck, co-founder of Boise Rock School, recipient for Excellence in the Arts Education for a group.

“I didn’t do much. I wrote some checks and made a few suggestions,” Esther Simplot, recipient of a Lifetime Achievement award for her dedication to supporting Boise’s performing arts community.

“This just reminds me that there’s so much more that I can do,” Pug Ostling, recipient of Lifetime Achievement for his work developing culture in Downtown.

“Anytime I had an idea of something to do, all I had to do is turn around and there was another organization willing to collaborate,” Kurt Zwolfer, education specialist at the Idaho Historical Museum, recipient for Excellence in History Education.

“I thought I’d just try it out for a while, then 33 years later I retired,” Rick Jenkins, retired coordinator of the Fort Boise Community Center’s arts center, recipient of Excellence in Arts Education for an individual.
