Varsity Extra athletes of the week (Oct. 21-26)

Congratulations to all the athletes who had great outings last week. I was overwhelmed with the number of nominations I received in many different sports. It was very hard to choose!

Please email nominations by Monday morning to rroberts@idahostatesman.com for performances based on the previous week.

FOOTBALL

Manny Sancho, Horseshoe Bend: The quarterback put up video-game numbers in the Mustangs’ 56-54 win over rival Garden Valley in the Timber Ax Classic. Sancho passed for 213 yards and five touchdowns, rushed for 364 yards and four more scores and added 14 tackles and one forced fumble on defense.

VOLLEYBALL

Nikki Davidson, Skyview: The Hawks won their third 4A District Three championship in a row by sweeping their way through the tournament. Skyview beat Columbia, Caldwell and Bishop Kelly. In a 25-20, 25-21, 25-20 win over BK in the title match, Davidson had 11 kills, 11 digs, two aces and one block. She averaged 11 digs and nine kills per tournament match, never hit below .300 or passed below 2.4.

GIRLS SOCCER

Grace Hancock, Boise: The junior defender moved all over the field for the Braves in their run to the 5A state championship. Hancock scored Boise’s game-winning goal in the 66th minute on a free kick in the championship game against Centennial.

BOYS SOCCER

Carter Perry, Boise: The senior forward led the Braves in scoring in three 5A state tournament victories. Perry finished with six goals and one assist as the Braves outscored their tournament opponents 14-1.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Sam McKinnon, Mountain View: The senior won the first 5A District Three individual title of her career. Her winning time of 17 minutes, 55.1 seconds on the 5-kilometer course at Eagle Island State Park was the first performance by an Idaho female this season to eclipse the 18-minute mark.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Andrew Rafla, Timberline: The senior posted the fastest time among District Three boys in any classification last week, winning the 5A District Three meet. Rafla completed the 5-kilometer course at Eagle Island State Park in 15 minutes, 34.84 seconds.
