Varsity Extra athletes of the week (Sept. 23-28)

Ryan Eckstrom, Mountain Home: The Tigers ended a losing streak dating back to the 2010 season with a 31-26 win against Caldwell. Eckstrom, a senior running back, had 18 carries for 154 yards and three touchdowns, and added 55 receiving yards and another TD. One of Eckstrom’s rushing TDs came on a 98-yard run from the line of scrimmage.


Hailey Cook, Skyview: The senior setter guided the Hawks to the school’s first championship in the gold bracket of the Bonneville Tournament. Cook also helped the Hawks to a pair of 4A Southern Idaho Conference victories during the week, finishing with 137 assists, 30 digs, nine kills, five aces and four blocks. Skyview won tournament games against Post Falls, Sugar-Salem, Highland, Idaho Falls, Madison, Rocky Mountain, Vallivue and Bonneville.


Hannah Griffin, Timberline: The senior goalkeeper’s season likely came to a heartbreaking end last week when she broke her thumb while attempting to make a save in a game last week. In 640 total minutes in goal this season for the Wolves, Griffin allowed just four goals with 33 saves for a goals-against average of .50 per game, which is tops among keepers with 500 minutes or more.


Tyson Fox, Rocky Mountain: The senior attacking midfielder increased his 5A Southern Idaho Conference-leading goals total to 17 overall after two games last week. Fox had three goals and two assists in a 6-0 win against Meridian, and accounted for his team’s only goals in a 7-2 loss to Centennial.


Sam McKinnon, Mountain View: The senior is honored with athlete of the week recognition again this season after running to a third-place finish at the Nike Pre Nationals meet in Portland over the weekend. McKinnon clocked a time of 18 minutes, 55.09 seconds on the 5-kilometer course at Portland Meadows Race Track.


Andrew Rafla, Timberline: The senior is recognized for the second straight week thanks to his third-place finish at Nike Pre Nationals over the weekend in Portland. Rafla ran the 5-kilometer course at Portland Meadows Race Track in 16 minutes, 7.29 seconds against a field of nationally ranked competitors.
