Varsity Extra athletes of the week (Oct. 14-19)

Josh Buss, Mountain View: The Mavericks took over third place in the 5A Southern Idaho Conference standings with a 28-21 win against Eagle. Buss, a senior running back, rushed 30 times for 226 yards and two touchdowns and caught two passes for 26 yards. The 6-foot-3, 195-pounder also received an offer from the University of Idaho before the game.


Bailey Irwin, Vallivue: The Falcons finished off the regular season with wins against Boise and Centennial. In a 26-24, 25-16, 17-25, 25-20 win over Boise, Irwin had 32 assists, seven kills and five digs. The junior setter then added 30 assists, six digs and one ace in a 25-13, 25-10, 25-17 sweep of Centennial. Vallivue, the defending district champion, earned the tournament’s No. 2 seed behind Timberline.


Mickie Piechowski, Bishop Kelly: The Knights won their fifth 4A District Three championship in a row with wins against Mountain Home (10-0), Skyview (4-0) and Middleton (2-0). Piechowski, a senior forward, scored in each of those victories and finished the week with six goals and one assist. BK earned the league’s No. 1 seed at state, where the Knights will try to win their fourth consecutive title.


Kevin Solis, Emmett: The Huskies won their first 4A District Three championship in boys soccer with wins over Skyview (4-2), Bishop Kelly (1-0) and Caldwell (4-3, 2OT). Solis, a senior forward, led the Huskies in scoring each game and finished the week with seven goals and one assist. Solis scored the final three goals in Emmett’s come-from-behind win over Caldwell in the district championship.


Emily Hamlin, Boise: In the final meet of the regular-season, Hamlin ran to a win in the Boise City Meet at Ann Morrison Park. The senior and two-time defending district and state champion completed the 5-kilometer course in 18 minutes, 22.7 seconds, helping the Braves earn the team victory. It is the third fastest time in the state this season, according to


Andrew Rafla, Timberline: The senior clocked his fastest time of the season in his final regular-season meet. Rafla won the 5-kilometer Boise City Meet at Ann Morrison Park in 15 minutes, 18.2 seconds. His time ranks second among all classifications this season, according to
