Varsity Extra athletes of the week (March 17-22)

BASEBALL

Robby Degen, Bishop Kelly: The senior pitcher/center fielder and four-year starter played a key role in BK’s wins over Skyvew (5-3) and Emmett (6-4), coach Bobby Sutcliffe said. Degen got the start on the mound against Skyview, pitching four innings with five strikeouts. He then went 2-for-3 at the plate against Emmett with a double, home run and two RBIs.

SOFTBALL

Courtney Moore, Mountain View: The Mavericks won three games last week against Timberline (15-2), Eagle (6-4) and Rocky Mountain (6-4). Moore, a starting pitcher and designated hitter, finished the week 4-for-6 from the plate with two home runs and four RBIs. She also earned a win in the circle, striking out five and walking two against Eagle.

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD

Cambree Harbaugh, Mountain View: The senior now owns three of the state’s top marks this season, according to athletic.net. Harbaugh won the 100 meters in 12.69 seconds and the long jump in 17 feet, 4.5 inches at a meet at Rocky Mountain High. She also established a state-leading distance of 36 feet, 5 inches in the triple jump.

BOYS TRACK & FIELD

Jake Knight, Rocky Mountain: The senior and Oregon State football signee did not compete in track and field last season, but made a strong return to the sport last week. During a meet on his home turf, Knight took over the top spot in the state this season — according to athletic.net — by winning the shot put with a throw of 53 feet, 9.25 inches and the discus with a toss of 169 feet, 6 inches.

GIRLS TENNIS

Kourtney Brown & Brooke Hadley, Timberline: The pair won the No. 1 girls doubles title at the Lewiston-Clarkston Invitational last week, defeating a team from Ferris 6-1, 2-6 (10-6). The Wolves also won the combined boys and girls championship with 220 points.

BOYS TENNIS

Kyle Whittaker, Borah: Whittaker won both of his No. 1 boys singles matches last week. He defeated Mountain View’s Ismar Alihodzic 6-1, 6-2 and topped Timberline’s Braxton Stinberg 6-1, 6-1. Whittaker is among the top returners in boys singles after finishing fourth at state last season.

GIRLS GOLF

Carson Pickett, Rocky Mountain: The Utah Valley signee recorded a 37 over nine holes at SpurWing Country Club last week, taking medalist honors and helping the Grizzlies finish first among three teams with a 179.

BOYS GOLF

Greg Law, Columbia: Law was the top finisher during the Nampa Invitational last week, shooting a 70 at Centennial Golf Course in Nampa to best a field that included 13 teams.
