Varsity Extra athletes of the week (Dec. 23-28)

Kyla Jewett, Rimrock: The Raiders claimed the Rolly Lincoln Memorial Christmas Tournament title at Wilder High last weekend. Jewett, a senior shooting guard, led Rimrock in scoring both days, contributing 12 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals in a 48-30 win against host Wilder. She then added 21points, four assists and two steals in a 48-35 victory over Jordan Valley (Ore.) in the championship game. The Raiders improved to 6-1 overall.


Leighton Vander Esch, Salmon River: The 2013 1A All-Idaho Player of the Year in football is equally tough on the hardwood. Vander Esch led the Savages to a championship at the Orofino Holiday Tournament over the weekend. The senior scored 42 points with 14 rebounds and six assists in a 77-59 win over Asotin (Wash.), and then added 23 points and 15 rebounds in a 50-49 win over host Orofino in the championship game. Salmon River is now 4-2 overall.


There were no high school results reported to the Idaho Statesman for the week of Dec. 23-28. The Rollie Lane Invitational returns this Friday and Saturday at the Idaho Center in Nampa.
