‘The Bench’ is worth the time to see

If you ever question whether there is real talent in the Treasure Valley, look no farther than this evening’s performance of “The Bench — Journey into Love.” The production is a hybrid of concert dance and theater — with a jazz music score by choreographer and show creator Kiesha Lalama and produced by Eric McCree of Boise’s Titus Theatricals.

The cast features an impressive array of mostly Idaho dancers, led by Boise Dance Co-op co-founder and Ballet Idaho principal Phylis Rothwell Affrunti and Lar Lubovitch dancer Tobin Del Cuore, a fabulous jazz orchestra of Idaho musician led by pianist Chuck Smith and two guest vocalists, Tituss Burgess and Angela Birchett (both are phenomenal).

This ambitious project came together in just one week. Again, impressive. It seeks to go on to Broadway. It’s a great chance to see something that has legs and can grow. If you have the time tonight, it’s worth the trip to Nampa.

It’s at 8 p.m. July 13 at the Nampa Civic Center, 311 3rd St. South. $25 at the box office.
