Rep. Lawerence Denney, former Speaker of the Idaho House, Monday referred to one of his opponents for the GOP nomination of Secretary of State as “the establishment candidate.”
Hmmm. That’s interesting since Deputy Ada County Clerk Phil McGrane has never run for elective office.
We’re certain Denney was referring to the fact that the current occupant of the SOS office, Ben Ysursa, has endorsed McGrane and considers him formidable.
The Idaho Statesman Editorial Board met with the two men (separately) today and hopes to meet with the other two Republicans vying for the office this week.
Denney, McGrane and former Idaho Sens. Mitch Toryanski and Evan Frasure all seek the GOP nomination that will be decided on May 20, which could be a very busy day for McGrane who essentially runs the elections in the populous Ada County.
Somebody’s life is about to change dramatically if they can win the nomination and prevail in the general election against Democrat Holli Woodings, who is in her first term in the Idaho House. She is unopposed in the primary.
We’ll find out more about Toryanski and Frasure this week. If McGrane were to lose out he’ll still have his Ada County job and a law degree to fall back on.
If Denney were to lose either the primary or general election he had a two word response to what would be next: “Go fishin’.”
Here are some brief opening statement that Denney and McGrane made about their qualifications for the job:
