Letters From the West

See what fat tire biking in the snow is like from a biker’s view

Idaho Statesman photographer Darin Oswald and I went to the Wood River Valley last week with Idaho Public Television producer Aaron Kunz and Videographer Pat Metzler in our first effort to forge a partnership between our two mediums.

Out of this already have come several photos and tweets on Twitter, a couple of videos and other journalism on the run reports from all of us. Sunday the story and photos Darin and I produced will run in the Idaho Statesman, our look at how Blaine County sees the Boulder-White Clouds issue. Earlier, Katherine Jones and I examined Custer County’s view.

Together Aaron, Pat, Darin and I all produced a video that will be available on our website Sunday as well. But here’s a great video Darin produced from his trip with a group of mountain bikers into the Boulders on far tire bikes. It’s just too cool.

Rocky Barker is the energy and environment reporter for the Idaho Statesman and has been writing about the West since 1985. He is the author of Scorched Earth How the Fires of Yellowstone Changed America and co-producer of the movie Firestorm: Last Stand at Yellowstone, which was inspired by the book and broadcast on A&E Network. He also co-authored the Flyfisher's Guide to Idaho and the Wingshooter's Guide to Idaho with Ken Retallic. He also was on the Statesman’s team that covered the Sen. Larry Craig sex scandal, which was one of three Pulitzer Prize finalists in breaking news in 2007. The National Wildlife Federation awarded him its Conservation Achievement Award.
