Rocky Mountain tight end commits to Oregon State

Jake Knight made an official visit to Oregon State’s campus last week, and it was enough to convince him he wanted to be a Beaver.

The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Rocky Mountain tight end called Oregon State tight ends coach Kyle DeVan on Saturday and gave him a verbal commitment.

“I really like the town and then coach (Mike) Riley is just a great guy and a good coach. All their coaches on their coaching staff are great,” Knight said. “They use the tight end a lot, and it was just a great fit.”

Knight played linebacker for the Grizzlies last season, but first-year coach Scott Criner moved him to tight end, where he has 27 receptions for 526 yards and eight touchdowns.

“He has really good athleticism. He’s physical. He runs well,” Criner said. “He has really nice hands. He is a skilled athlete in a big body.”

Rocky Mountain (9-1) finished the 5A SIC regular season as the No. 2 seed, and led the league in scoring (50.3) and yards (554) per game.

Knight also had scholarship offers from Idaho and Weber State, and received interest from Oregon, Boise State and Arizona State, he said.

He was a first-team selection at linebacker in the 5A SIC last season, showcasing his great hands with three interceptions.

Knight and the Grizzlies will host conference rival Eagle in the state quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Friday at Brighton Stadium.
