Rocky Mountain High DB decides on Oregon

Senior Khalil Oliver made his much anticipated announcement during a school signing ceremony Wednesday at Rocky Mountain High by removing his sweatshirt to reveal an Oregon Ducks T-shirt.

He then put on an Oregon hat to the applause of the crowd on hand to watch 24 Rocky Mountain athletes put pen to paper.

“I was very nervous,” said Oliver, who had the Oregon hat tucked away in his backpack. “We didn’t really even plan out when I was going to do it. It kind of just happened.”

Oliver originally gave a verbal commitment to Boise State last spring, but re-opened his recruiting after coach Chris Petersen took the same job at Washington.

“With Coach Pete leaving I realized that I shouldn’t be going to a school just for a head coach, but the entire program,” Oliver said. “I needed to make sure that if I’m going to a school, I’m going to love every part of it.”

Over the past month, Oliver took official visits to Washington, Boise State and Oregon to help him decide where he wanted to continue his football career — and education.

Oregon also gave him the opportunity to continue to compete in track and field. Oliver is the reigning 5A state champion in the 110-meter hurdles.

“As soon as I got there and I started seeing the environment around the school, I fell in love with it,” Oliver said.

Oliver was among eight Rocky Mountain football players to sign a letter of intent Wednesday. He sat next to teammate and future rival Jake Knight — an Oregon State recruit — during the signing ceremony. Elija Armstrong (Scottsdale CC), Isaiah Johnson (Scottsdale CC), Jason Crimmins (Western Oregon), Garry Callis (Weber State), Riley Bradshaw (Weber State) and Kekoa Nawahine (Boise State) were the other football signees.
