Idaho 52 was closed at 1 p.m. Sunday after two days of rock slides — and concerns about another, according to the Idaho Transportation Department. The affected area is between mileposts 37 and 45.
Traffic is being re-routed to Shell Rock Road between Montour and Plaza roads in Gem County.
Irrigation officials inspected a canal along the highway Sunday afternoon to try to determine what is saturating the hillside. It was unclear if the water was coming from the canal, a spring or another source, ITD said.
After a slide on Saturday, traffic on the highway was reduced to a single lane with flaggers. After a second slide on Sunday, the debris was removed, and highway officials decided to shut down travel on the highway.
