River permits available for South Fork of the Salmon River and Big Creek

The Payette National Forest has free permits available at the McCall and Krassel Ranger Districts offices in McCall that allow boaters to float the South Fork of the Salmon River and exit on the Salmon River without being required to have a main Salmon River permit. Permits are also available that allow boaters to float Big Creek and exit on to the Middle Fork of the Salmon River.

These permits are free, but mandatory for all users. Permits allow boaters to exit the South Fork, Salmon River and/or Big Creek on to the Middle Fork of the Salmon River or the main Salmon River without a separate permit as long as they exit the river system on the same day with no camping on either river.

Permits can be obtained by visiting the Krassel Ranger District office located at 500 N Mission Street, or the McCall Ranger District office located at 102 W Lake Street, both in McCall. Office hours are 8 am and 4:30 pm, Monday thru Friday, or you can call the offices if you have questions pertaining to the free use permits. McCall Ranger District – 208-634-0400, Krassel Ranger District – 208-634-0600.
