More than 250 high school students from 24 teams across Idaho will compete in regional mock trial competitions in early March. The first regional competitions are Saturday, March 2, in Caldwell and Blackfoot.
The competitions are part of the Idaho Law Foundation’s education program. This year’s case pits freedom of speech against separation of church and state.
About 100 teachers, judges, attorneys, and others contribute their time to be coaches, advisors, judges, and coordinators for regional and state competitions. At regional competitions, teams compete in three rounds held in real courtrooms. Teams play either defense or prosecution, depending on the round.
Another regional competition is scheduled for March 9 in Lewiston. Twelve teams will advance to the state competition in Boise March 20-22. For more info, contact Carey Shoufler at 208.334.4500.
