Opening of Baumgartner Campground’s in limbo

Due to impacts from the Kelley Fire last summer, the popular  Baumgartner Campground continues to not be available for reservations for 2014 camping season.

Whether it will open at all this summer remains in question. “Until further notice, the campground and the hot springs pool will remain closed,” the U.S. Forest Service said Feb. 5.

While Baumgartner Campground was spared from the effects of the Kelley Fire, areas immediately surrounding the campground, including the interpretive trail and slopes directly above some of the campsites, were burned.

“Once the hazards associated with the wildfire have been mitigated, the campground will be available for camping and reservations,” said Julie Thomas, public affairs officer with the Sawtooth National Forest. Currently, no specific date is set for opening the campground or hot pool.

The Kelley Group Site (No. 100), located across the South Fork of the Boise River from the Baumgartner Campground, will remain open and is currently available for group reservations HERE

Although many areas directly outside of the campground, including Kelley Flats, will be open for camping, some dispersed campsites along burned slopes will be temporarily closed until trees weakened by fire and other hazards have been removed.

In addition, some trails and roads in the area may also be closed due to damage caused by the wildfire. Crews will be working to repair the damage and remove hazards, with the intent of opening them as soon as possible, throughout the summer.
