Nampa firefighters set fundraiser, demonstration Saturday

Fifteen members of the Nampa Fire Department will compete March 9 in the Scott Firefighter Stairclimb to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

The Nampa firefighter team is once again among the top 10 teams in the nation for fundraising and will seek public donations Saturday (March 1) at Dutch Bros. Coffee, 373 Caldwell Blvd., Nampa, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

During the fundraiser, the firefighters will demonstrate how they must carry their equipment and climb the 69 flights of stairs (1,311 steps) to reach the observation deck in the Columbia Center, the second tallest building west of the Mississippi. The elevation is 788 feet.

The Nampa team has been successful in past years in both fundraising and overall team times, according to Senior Firefighter Shawn Mangun.

The Nampa team has set a goal of $20,000. Participants raise the money through individual and department fundraising, and entry fees. In 2013, the event featured 1,500 firefighters from 282 different departments and brought in a record $1.44 million for blood-cancer research and patient services.
