Mountain bike trails are a gender equalizer

I put a lot of miles on my mountain bike this weekend and was encouraged to see numerous gals out doing the same thing. It doesn’t surprise me, but at the same time, it was cool seeing them out there. I talked to a gal while we were both at a trail intersection waiting for our riding buddies to catch up. She had just spotted a rattlesnake near the trail that I had ridden past and had no idea it was there.

I guess the encounter struck me as interesting because I am a 40-something guy who was randomly shooting the breeze with what appeared to be a 20-something gal. Maybe we had nothing else in common than riding, but riding mountain bikes made us part of the same clique. The beauty of outdoor sports is they often break that awkward wall between genders.
