There’s a fine line between being a dedicated hunter and sitting in a frozen field and feeling dumber than a goose. The setting on Saturday seemed almost too good to be true. A plowed-over corn field about a mile from Lake Lowell, a perfectly camouflaged pit blind, a trailer full of life-like decoys and five experienced hunters. But like any recipe, you can have all the ingredients and things can still go wrong. It wasn’t our effort that was lacking, it was simply the geese weren’t impressed by them. Flocks flew by all morning with barely a courtesy glance. But that’s hunting, and no regrets. You give it your best shot, even if sometimes, you don’t even take a shot.
