Meridian Dairy Days runs Tuesday through Saturday; carnival is back

settingup

The carnival has come to town. Setup began Monday in the parking lot of the Meridian Speedway.

The carnival at last year’s Meridian Dairy Days was cancelled due to a failed electrical inspection. Inland Empire Shows Inc. isn’t back this year.

The Payette-based Funtime Carnival Co. was setting up Monday. Temperatures soared into the 90s, and workers were trying to cool down with snow cones from a booth near the Meridian Community Pool.

“It looks like everything is going smooth so far,” said Hans Bruijn, president of the Dairy Days board.

Meridian Dairy Days runs Tuesday through Saturday. The only events scheduled Tuesday are the dairy princess contests.

The carnival opens at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Single ticket, $1.25 each; sheet of 20, $20; and sheet of 50, $40. Rides are 2 to 4 tickets each, I was told. Tickets are non-refundable. Before purchasing tickets, check height requirements for rides.

At 6 p.m. Wednesday on the speedway, Cricket Dairy Days Races; cost is $10.

The parade is one of the most popular attractions at Dairy Days but that was cancelled due road construction. But there are many other activities for kids and families each day, including Fast Lane Kart races on the speedway, a stroller ride/ parade in Storey Park, a fun run / walk, a Nerf battlefield and a bicycle race.

Ozseeker the Clown will perform in Storey Park 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Shows are free.

Interested in farm animals and/or animal husbandry? Stop by Old McDonald’s Farm at the Dairy Barn Thursday through Saturday (hours vary). The 4-H/FFA will do an education program at 10 a.m. Friday in the Dairy Showring, and a dairy cattle and goat show will be at 9 a.m. Saturday in the Dairy Barn.

The event concludes with a big pool bash from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Meridian swimming pool, and a 7 p.m. High Street Band concert at City Hall Outdoor Plaza on Broadway.

Funtime

CARNIVAL MASCOT: A black cat named Funtime tours with the carnival. He lapped up a bowl of water Monday afternoon as temperatures soared.
