Meridian approves levy to cover enrollment increase

$2.58 million.

That’s what the state’s largest school district can collect this year, to accommodate an enrollment increase of about 600.

The Meridian School Board approved the emergency levy Tuesday night.

As Meridian Press reported, the emergency levy translates to about $4 for every $100,000 of taxable property.

And it provides about $4,300 for every new student in Meridian.

Last week, Meridian reported enrollment of 36,269, compared to 35,619 a year ago. The across-the-board increase exceeded projections, and now the district is looking to hire staff to handle the influx, as well as adding supplies such as desks and textbooks. (For more backstory, here’s a link to Idaho Education News’ previous coverage of the enrollment increase.)
