McGrane adds another big name to endorsement list: former Idaho Gov. Batt

Ada County Chief Deputy Clerk Phil McGrane has been endorsed by former Republican Gov. Phil Batt as the first-time candidate for Idaho secretary of state faces three more experienced GOP hands.

Batt’s endorsement sounded the same theme as outgoing Secretary of State Ben Ysursa emphasized in announcing his support of McGrane on Tuesday.

Said Batt in a news release from the McGrane campaign: “Over the years, I’ve had the utmost respect and confidence in the Secretary of State’s office being led by Pete Cenarrusa and Ben Ysursa to be run with sound judgment, common sense and fiscal responsibility. Phil McGrane is the right Republican to continue this tradition. I encourage others to join Ben and me in voting for Phil McGrane for Secretary of State.”

Cenarrusa, who died in September, was secretary of state from 1967 to 1993, when Ysursa, his longtime chief deputy, succeeded him. The office administers Idaho’s election law, campaign finance and lobbyist disclosure and corporate filings.

McGrane faces former Idaho House Speaker Lawerence Denney of Midvale and former Sens. Mitch Toryanski of Boise and Evan Frasure of Pocatello in the May 20 Republican primary. The winner will oppose Democratic Rep. Holli Woodings of Boise in November.

McGrane’s news release follows:

Former Governor Phil Batt Endorses McGrane for Secretary of State

“One candidate has demonstrated the ability as well as the character and integrity necessary to fulfill the obligations of this office and that is Phil McGrane,” says Governor Batt

(BOISE) —On the heels of Secretary of State Ben Ysursa’s endorsement, former Governor Phil Batt today endorsed Phil McGrane to be the Republican Party nominee for Secretary of State in the May 20th GOP primary.

On endorsing McGrane, Governor Batt said, “Over the years, I’ve had the utmost respect and confidence in the Secretary of State’s office being led by Pete Cenarrusa and Ben Ysursa to be run with sound judgment, common sense and fiscal responsibility.  Phil McGrane is the right Republican to continue this tradition. I encourage others to join Ben and me in voting for Phil McGrane for Secretary of State.”

Commenting on receiving today’s endorsement, Phil McGrane said, “Governor Batt is a leader I know the majority of Idahoans hold in great esteem and respect.  His actions as Governor are still today remembered as a model of strong leadership, sound judgment and most importantly fiscal responsibility.  When elected as Idaho’s next Secretary of State I will strive to serve the people of this great state with the same integrity, honor and commitment to even-handed fairness that marked the tenure of Governor Phil Batt.”
