SOUTHWICK ON THE RUN
Boise State’s evolving new offense added the quarterback run in a heavy dose Friday night.
Senior quarterback Joe Southwick rushed three times for 21 yards and his first career touchdown in the first half. All appeared to be designed runs.
Southwick ran the option for 6 yards on third-and-3 on the first drive and pitched to tailback Aaron Baltazar on the option for 4 yards on third-and-1 on the third drive. He added a 14-yard run on a quarterback draw and a 1-yard TD run when he faked a handoff and escaped around right end to cap the third drive.
Southwick gained 42 yards rushing in the first two games, mostly on scrambles.
“He’s really, really progressed for us in terms of being a good runner in scrambling situations,” offensive line coach and run game coordinator Chris Strausser said earlier this week, “and so now for us to find the right times to get him to carry the ball in the game is probably that next step.”
Boise State starting tailback Jay Ajayi, a sophomore, fumbled twice on the opening drive of the second half as rain began to fall at Bronco Stadium. Offensive lineman Marcus Henry recovered the first but Air Force pounced on the second, ending a drive that had reached the Falcons’ 5-yard line.
HITTING THE CENTURY MARK
Ajayi and junior wide receiver Matt Miller posted the second 100-yard games of their careers. Ajayi carried XX times for XX yards. Miller made a career-high XX catches for XX yards.
Ajayi’s previous 100-yard game came last year at New Mexico (six carries, 118 yards). Miller’s was last year at Nevada (seven catches, 127 yards).
HOLDEN HUFF OUT WITH INJURY
Boise State sophomore tight end Holden Huff missed the Air Force game with an injury. Huff has been banged up since fall camp, when he missed the open scrimmage. He had one catch for 6 yards in the first two games.
CONFERENCE OPENER SUCCESS
Boise State had won 13 straight conference openers going into the Air Force game. That’s the second-longest active streak in the country behind Alabama’s 21. Boise State’s last loss in an opener came at North Texas (Big West) in 1999.
