Listen: Boise duo Wolvserpent releases new album today

By its very definition, extreme music isn’t for everyone. But “Perigaea Antahkarana,” the cinematic, atmospheric head rush from Boise doom/drone metal duo Wolvserpent, contains elements of music and nature that almost any human being should appreciate.

The four-song, 80-minute experience is alternately peaceful and skull-crushing, sort of like sprawling in the grass of an Idaho mountain meadow and listening to birds chirp — before a grizzly suddenly appears and starts mauling you.

It’s worth noting that this album was released today by Relapse Records, one of the heavy hitters of the extreme metal world. So kudos to Wolvserpent members Blake Green and Brittany McConnell. Even as a “fringe” label and genre — and you could argue that certain Relapse bands are borderline mainstream nowadays — it’s definitely another feather in the cap of Boise’s local music scene.

Stereogum is streaming the entire album here. Give a listen. Wear headphones. Prepare for trickling water and dark Idaho forest trolls playing chamber music.
