Two promising, young Boise State football players have been suspended from school for violating university policy, the school announced Monday. No other information was released.

Safety Lee Hightower, who would have been a junior this year, and tight end Hayden Plinke, who would have been a sophomore, were suspended for the final six games of last season.

Hightower started 11 of the 15 games he played at Boise State. Plinke made two catches for 20 yards last season but was considered a future star at tight end.

The release did not say whether the players could return to Boise State but says they are “no longer students at Boise State.” Coach Chris Petersen meets the media Wednesday, on National Signing Day, and likely will provide more clarity then.

Defensive back Eric Agbaroji, who would have been a sophomore, also has left the team and plans to transfer, the school reports.

Sophomore defensive tackle Jeff Worthy, who was suspended for nearly all of last season, remains on the roster.

Boise State also announced the football team’s spring enrollees. They are:

JUNIOR COLLEGE SIGNEES
— K Tyler Rausa, 5-10, 180, Riverside CC (Temecula, Calif.)
— RB Derrick Thomas, 6-1, 210, Butler CC (Dothan, Ala.)
— CB Cleshawn Page, 5-10, 190, Harbor College (Los Angeles)
— DT Deuce Mataele, 6-3, 285, Mt. San Antonio College (West Valley, Utah)

GRAYSHIRTS
— WR D.J. Dean, 6-1, 190, Eagle HS
— OL Archie Lewis, 6-4, 255, Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.) HS

RETURNING MISSIONARY
— LB Darren Lee, 6-2, 203, Lassen HS (Susanville, Calif.)

Dean and Lee had been listed at multiple positions on signing day. The positions listed are where they’re expected to begin their careers.

Also of note: LB Chris Collins, who signed last year and intended to grayshirt, has gone to a junior college and won’t join the Broncos.

Best I can tell, there are 64 scholarship players on Boise State’s roster this spring. That leaves 18 openings (the team is limited to 82 for one last year because of the NCAA case). There are 20 commitments that we have confirmed and who aren’t already enrolled, plus one or two more that have been reported elsewhere. At worst, that would put Boise State over by four — a number that could be managed easily with attrition and grayshirts (one recruit already is planning to take a mission). Keep in mind linebacker Joe Martarano still could end up playing baseball, too. A couple walk-ons could be due scholarships, which would reduce the available number.
