Cheeseburger hold the fries

On the menu: H.J. took Gilbert to Donna’s Place in Idaho City for a bacon cheeseburger and fries.

Notable: Gilbert refused to eat French fries and tater tots regardless of what they were dipped in.

H.J. thought he would escape the heat and head to the hills with mans best friend. Gilbert enjoyed the car ride and stretched out in the back seat. They dined on the covered porch at Donna’s Place where Gilbert was the perfect patron. There was a lot of foot traffic on the porch but Gilbert didn’t seem to mind he didn’t even react to the yappy little dogs that shared the porch with him! Once the food was delivered Gilbert was excited to dig in but his excitement turned to disappointment when he tried the fries. He just wasn’t sure what to do with them or what to make of them. H.J. tried ketchup, ranch, and fry sauce and none of them tempted Gilbert. Though Gilbert wasn’t impressed with French fries or tater tots he did love the cheeseburger and was quick to eat it. After he finished his burger he finished the rest of H.J.’s burger because Jeff couldn’t resist those big brown eyes. Gilbert was not a fan of the lettuce or tomato but he was happy to finish the beef patty. They completed lunch with a bowl of vanilla ice cream. One lick and Gilbert was hooked! With every spoonful he was begging Hamburger Jeff for more. Jeff asked him to demonstrate a few of his commands but Gilbert was so excited about the ice cream he could hardly focus.

After lunch: they enjoyed a walk through town but it was still quite hot. On the way down the mountain they stopped at Grimes Creek so Gilbert could get his feet wet. Gilbert was tired and eager to get in the car to stretch out for a nap.

More about Gilbert from the Idaho Humane Society:
Gilbert wins over everyone he meets. He is charming and sensitive. Uses eye contact to ask for direction if needed. Loves to carry things in his mouth, especially his leash but knows the drop it command. He also knows sit, down, shake, watch me, loose leash and a few other tricks. He’s not a big fan of the crate but he’s crate trained and is house trained. He has shown excellent house manners and hasn’t sought out table scraps but he loves his treats! Gilbert loves to ride in the car and will settle in the backseat without a crate. Gilbert is in a foster home with a local dog trainer and he often goes to work with her. He has been used as an example in AKC S.T.A.R puppy and Canine Good Citizen classes and has also helped test others. He goes everywhere with his foster mom and she reports that he has accompanied her on many patio lunches and will politely ask strangers for a pet and then lay down. He hasn’t met a dog he hasn’t liked big, small, or giant and will take correction and handicap himself when playing with the little ones. He goes to Camp Bow Wow a few days a week to play and socialize with other dogs. He’s still a bit scared of loud rambunctious children but has improved drastically. He’s currently living with 2 dogs and 2 cats. Gilbert loves neighborhood walks with the neighborhood stray cats that always follow. He has so much love to give. He needs to be treated and trained like a new puppy. Boundaries are important for this guy. He needs to know he’s pleasing you, this makes him content. He loves to cuddle and makes the best pillow. He’s a very fun loving dork of a dog. He’s goofy and needs physical and mental exercise to balance out. He’s pack fed and will sit for his dinner. He knows his turn and lets the others finish if they take longer. He has never resource guarded anything but does like to pick up things he likes and hide them in his kennel like bras, shirts, shoes, hairclips, etc. A training package will be included in his adoption package so the new adopter can learn all of his commands. To meet Gilbert call his foster mom Shannon at 775-621-8414. Gilbert- American Pit Bull Terrier- Black- 2 years old – 46 lbs.
