Anglers got their start on ice fishing over the weekend at Horsethief Reservoir and Lake Cascade. Horsethief has about 4 inches of ice, which is the minimal amount recommended for walking on the ice. Leave those ATVs and snowmobiles on the beach. Lake Cascade has about 3.5 inches off the city boat ramp, but with continued cold weather, that should thicken daily. Tom McGlashen at Tackle Tom’s in Cascade said ice can thicken up to an inch a day at when temperatures are near zero degrees. The north end of the lake typically freezes first, and McGlashen said the area around Poison Creek often has good ice fishing early in the season. No word out of Magic Reservoir yet, but I will have that in the fishing report in Thursday’s Idaho Outdoors.
