John May, a Boise native and a partner in the group that owned the Owyhee Plaza Hotel from 1992 until recently, is no stranger to governing boards.
In the past decade, he served as a member of the Capital City Development Corporation, the city of Boise’s urban renewal agency, as well as the Idaho Travel Council. He has also served on the boards of the Downtown Boise Association, Idaho Lodging and Restaurant Association and the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce.
The Greater Boise Auditorium District, authorized by city voters in 1959, gets its money from a tax on hotel bookings throughout the district.
“A strong voice representing the hospitality industry and those who collect the tax should be an essential part of this board, and I feel strongly
that with my qualifications I can be that person,” May said in a statement announcing his candidacy. “My hope is that with the right members in place many of the issues that this board has had over the past years can be put behind us and that we can get back to the business of running a convention
center which is a key element to the success of our city.”
