Gear: Aire adds new paddle cat

raft2The evolution of rafting keeps producing more inflatables for all kinds of uses and Aire’s new Sabertooth paddle cat looks like the ultimate sports car for the river.

It has two pontoons connected with thwarts. I spotted one at Idaho River Sports in Boise and got to talking IRS co-owner Stan Kolby about all the possibilities with this new-fangled rafts. Stan has it set up with a rowing frame, which is ideal for one person or two persons on a self-support trip.

Without the frame, the raft can be paddled easily by four people.

It’s 12.5 feet long and built for big water or creeks.

Cost $2,699; seen at Idaho River Sports. See the photos with the frame and without. Photos by Pete Zimowsky/Idaho Statesman
