Forest Service hopes to improve Big Bar Campground

big bar The U.S. Forest Service is proposing to renovate recreation facilities at Big Bar Campground on the shores of Hells Canyon Reservoir.

The Payette National Forest is applying for a Recreation Vehicle and Waterways Program Grant through Idaho’s Department of Parks and Recreation for the renovation.

This is a good idea because Hells Canyon Reservoir offers boating, fishing and hiking but there is only one developed campground on the shores at the middle of the reservoir and that’s Idaho Power’s Hells Canyon Park. Another  developed campground around the lower end of the reservoir, with updated facilities, would be a help to anglers and boaters.

I think sometimes Hells Canyon Reservoir is under used because of the lack of developed camping.

The renovations would include the replacement of existing restrooms with four disabled accessible concrete vault style restrooms, as well as the replacement of the existing boat dock.  The project would also construct new information kiosks and place barrier rocks to help direct traffic flow.  The work will be accomplished by Forest Service recreation crew members, partners, contractors and volunteers.

If funded, the majority of the work will take place during the 2014 summer field season with a spring of 2015 completion date.  Comments or requests for more information about the project can be submitted to:  Jascha Zeitlin, Outdoor Recreation Staff, Weiser Ranger District, 851 East 9th Street, Weiser, ID  83672, Phone 208-549-4200.
