Five Things You Should Do This Weekend in Boise

Assuming you aren’t being strip searched on your way into an outdoor concert

1. HIT THE FAIR
The Western Idaho Fair roared out of the gate today. Why not inhale a couple of Pronto Pups, suck down some overpriced beer and try not to barf on one of those crazy midway rides? Here’s the scoop on all the best bets, from rides to grandstand concerts. (I’ll share my thoughts about the grandstand concerts in my column Sunday. D’oh!) Here’s a video to put you in the fair mood …

2. CATCH A BOBCAT
If you remember comedian Bobcat Goldthwait as an annoying, screaming freak, that would be accurate. Interestingly, that’s not what his stand-up show is about anymore. He’s somewhat … normal. And funnier. He’s headlining at 8:15 and 10 tonight and Saturday at Liquid Laughs. It’s $20.

3. START WINING
Wine aficionados, snobs, fans — whatever — have a couple of good options. The Basque Museum’s Winefest is from 5:30 to 9:30 tonight. And the Boise Co-op and Wine Shop is hosting Festa Italiana — a wine and food tasting — from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.

4. HAVE A POPS PICNIC
The Boise Philharmonic begins its “Picnic at the Pops” series Saturday with a “Latin Fever” show at Woodriver Cellars. A full season preview is here.

5. GET FAT
Craft beer has a lot of calories. What can I say? Of course, you can ride some of those at Tour de Fat. Organizers reportedly are expecting as many as 10,000 cyclists for Saturday’s parade, beer party and concert extravaganza at Ann Morrison Park. [More]
