Documentary filmmaker eyes Idaho’s Second Congressional District race

A.J. Schnack, best known for the documentaries “Kurt Cobain: About a Son” and “Caucus,” which recorded the chaos of the 2012 Republican presidential campaigns in Iowa, is considering making the Republican primary campaign in Idaho’s Second Congressional District part of his upcoming series on the country’s mid-term elections.

I met with Schnack on Wednesday and we talked for a half-hour or so about our impressions of the race. He said the race between eight-term incumbent Mike Simpson and challenger Bryan Smith is among five finalists for the series. He’ll narrow the list to three in the next week or two, he said.

Political pundits and interest groups have been keeping tabs on the Simpson-Smith race ever since Smith announced his candidacy last June and attracted money from hard-right groups such as the Club for Growth and Senate Conservatives Fund. They consider it one of the most important races in the nation this year, one that could help determine whether the Tea Party and hard-line conservative elements within the Republican Party have staying power.
