Cool volunteer opportunity: help Preservation Idaho clean up a classic Fort Boise treasure

Preservation Idaho is partnering with the Boise Veterans Administration Medical Center to clean and restore Building 4 at Fort Boise, one of the oldest buildings in the complex.

They’re calling for volunteers to help clean the building and ready it for its facelift on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 10 to 1 p.m.

Preservation Idaho will supply the tools, cleaning materials, even a few refreshments.

Preservation Idaho Bldg. 4 Clean-Up

Saturday October 12th 10 am to 1:OO pm

 

Enter VAMC from 5th and Fort streets, follow loop road at first angle right.  Bldg. 4 is the first building on right of Officer’s Row as you start up hill.  Parking past bldg. on left or behind Bldg. 4, which is accessed from alley.  Cleaning tools and refreshments provided.  If you can – bring cleaning supplies & hot water.

 

Tasks

Remove screen from front porch (use pry shingle to avoid damage to five-chamfer columns

Sweep up front porch  (gloves and mask required)

Sweep and vacuum interior floors

Clean both bathrooms

Clean kitchen and cupboards

Move fridge to kitchen and clean, plug in.

Clean-up and sweep up back porch + clean windows

Scrape over-painting on interior and exterior windows and clean

Replace missing or burnt out light bulbs.

Do inventory of second floor space (photograph 2nd floor) Compare to 1924-steam plan to determine modifications (ladder for access)

Do inventory of bldgs. doors and hardware.  Inventory of window locks and hardware.

Look under or pull-up corner of carpets to determine type of flooring in each room.

Make observations about building condition or needs.

Identify potential donors, labor, or materials
