Centennial High senior commits to Duke track and field team

Tanner Johnson won the boys long jump at the 5A state meet in May.

Senior Tanner Johnson gave a verbal commitment to Duke track and field coach Shawn Wilbourn on Saturday while he was on an official visit to the school in Durham, N.C.

“I actually ended up getting in to Princeton just recently, and this whole Duke visit kind of changed my perspective and I decided to go there,” Johnson said. “… It’s an exceptional academic experience but along with that, a very elite level of athletics.”

Johnson — who has a 4.3 grade-point average — also made visits to Air Force, Dartmouth and Princeton before making his decision. More than 20 Division I schools offered Johnson the opportunity to make an official visit, he said.

The 6-foot-3, 195-pounder plans to compete in the decathlon for Duke.

Last season, Johnson won the long jump at the 5A state meet with a leap of 22 feet, 10.5 inches. He was third in the high jump and fifth in the 400 meters.

In 2012, Johnson also played wide receiver for the Patriots’ football team. Michigan, Stanford and Harvard asked Johnson to attend their camps, he said.

“I love track and I am happy I am doing the decathlon,” Johnson said.
