The Boise State football team will play a home-and-home series with Virginia, Boise State announced Monday.

The teams will meet Sept. 26, 2015, in Charlottesville, Va., and Sept. 23, 2017, at Bronco Stadium.

Virginia and Michigan State (2022) are the only Bowl Championship Series-conference schools outside of the Northwest to agree to play regular-season games against Boise State on the blue.

Virginia was 4-8 last season. The Cavaliers were 8-5 in 2011 and 4-8 in 2010.

“I think our fans will be extremely excited about the Broncos hosting an ACC school,” Boise State Athletic Director Mark Coyle said in a statement. “We continue to work hard on scheduling home-and-home games against BCS opponents and a series like this with an East Coast team will help spread the Bronco brand.”

The Virginia series is part of an upgraded non-conference future for the Broncos. They have 11 games scheduled from 2014 to 2017 (they need five more). All of those opponents are BCS teams or BYU — Ole Miss, BYU (four), Washington, Virginia (two), Washington State (two) and Oregon State.

Virginia also is pushing for strong non-conference schedules, which helped Boise State land the game.

“We’re excited to announce this series with a program that has been exceptional over the last decade,” Virginia Executive Associate Athletics Director Jon Oliver said in a statement. “They’ve done it with great coaching, solid recruiting and a fearless approach to competition. We are trying to do the same thing and this will be an incredible challenge for us as we continue to build our program. The 2015 and 2017 seasons could end up being two of the toughest schedules in the history of our football program and we hope they will excite and energize our fans, student-athletes and recruits.”
