The Boise State Broncos picked up a pair of receivers Sunday.
Sean Modster, a speedy receiver from Mission Viejo (Calif.) High, committed to the Broncos, according to the Orange County Register, while Shay Fields confirmed his commitment to the Idaho Statesman.
After pondering over an offer from Boise State for a month, Fields got a taste of what it would be like to play for the Broncos last weekend while taking part in the Broncos’ high school camp.
That was enough to get the 5-foot-10, 165-pound receiver from St. John Bosco High in Bellflower, Calif., to verbally commit to Boise State on Sunday.
“I thought about for a week after being there, but I felt I was ready,” Fields said. “It was a lot of things — I just really liked the coaches, liked the campus, liked that it was a football town and the academics, too.”
Fields turned down offers from Nevada, Fresno State, San Jose State, San Diego State and Hawaii. Last season as a junior, he had 25 catches for 576 yards (a team-high 23 yards per catch) and four touchdowns. He is the top returning receiver on a St. John Bosco squad that has six players rated as three stars or higher on Rivals.com — Fields is a three-star recruit, according to Rivals and Scout.com (which has him ranked as its No. 83 receiver nationally).
“I’m going to try to work on getting bigger, but my quickness is one of my strengths — (Boise State coaches) said they envision me doing a lot of different things with the ball,” Fields said.
In April, Rivals.com wrote a piece called “nine underrated prospects to watch,” saying of Fields that at a 7-on-7 event in Las Vegas, he played receiver and running back: “He created significant separation at both positions. He gets off the line quickly and runs tight routes. He is slightly undersized, but it’s not a glaring issue by any means.”
Modster had 935 yards on 45 catches last season. Click here for the OC Register’s story on Modster committing.
After Fields’ commitment, Scout.com’s Brandon Huffman posted this on his Twitter account:
