Boise State football gets commitment from 2014 tight end

Drew Sample, a 6-foot-4, 235-pound tight end from Newport High in Bellevue, Wash., has verbally committed to the Boise State football team.

Sample, who will be a senior in the fall, recently took part in Boise State’s high school camp last weekend, when he was also offered. After pondering over it for a few days, Sample pulled the trigger Thursday.

“When I went there, met coach (Chris) Petersen, I loved the way he treats his guys, and his philosophy on how he puts together a team,” Sample said. “It’s a great football town — and the blue turf is amazing.”

Boise State was among nearly a dozen schools to offer Sample, who also claimed offers from Idaho, South Florida, Nevada, Air Force, UNLV and UTEP, among others. He noted the Broncos liked him as a tight end, but also said his versatility and size could allow him to at times split out wide as a receiver. As a junior last season, he had 12 catches for 218 yards and five touchdowns on a team that ran for nearly 4,000 yards. His 218 yards accounted for 28 percent of the team’s receiving yards (773).

Sample played hockey until he reached high school, so he said he’s still has a lot of room to grow.

“I’ll be working on my fundamentals, just trying to get those in place before I go to Boise,” Sample said. “I was waiting to find a place where I really, really wanted to go. I found that, so it’s nice to have it done before senior year.”
