The Boise State basketball team added some needed height when 6-foot-10, 240-pound center Kevin Allen of Pratt (Kan.) Community College verbally committed Monday night, he confirmed via text message.
Allen, originally from Detroit, averaged 13.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game this season. He spent the 2012-13 season at Jackson Community College in Michigan, where he averaged 8.8 ppg and 6.5 rpg. He is expected to join the team this summer and will be a junior with a redshirt year available. He had 31 points and 17 rebounds against Trinity Valley in the first round of the NJCAA tournament on March 17. That game garnered interest from around the country, including Boise State. Allen said he also picked up offers from Kansas State, Texas Tech, Houston, Nebraska and Oklahoma State, among others.
“It’s been crazy,” he said.
The Broncos signed 6-9 Texas forward David Wacker and 6-7 California wing Chandler Hutchison in the early period back in November. Allen can officially sign April 16. Allen said he has not visited Boise, but plans to next week for his official visit.
After I tweeted his commitment, Allen replied with some confidence:
Prolific rebounder Ryan Watkins is out of eligibility, so the Broncos will need some strength and size inside. Sophomore Nick Duncan will certainly play a role in that, as will Wacker in all likelihood, while returners like Edmunds Dukulis, Joey Nebeker and Jake Ness could earn more time, but Allen’s addition will further bolster those needs.
“They told me there was a big opening where I could come in right away and play,” Allen said. “I’ll do whatever they ask of me.”
