After sweeping the 3,200 meters, 1,600 and 800 at the 5A state meet in May, Boise senior Thomas Rigby was chosen as the 2012-13 Gatorade Idaho Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year on Thursday.

Rigby’s winning time of 1 minute, 50.80 seconds in the 800 established an overall state meet record and helped him secure back-to-back titles in the event. Rigby’s distance trifecta had not been done in the 5A boys classification since Spencer Hill of Boise won all three races in 1992.

“Thomas Rigby had an amazing year for us in track and field,” Boise Athletic Director Tracy Leinen said in a press release. “At the state meet, he just decided that he was going to step up and give it his all. He did it with a lot of character and has become a leader in our school.”

Rigby, who has maintained a 4.0 GPA, will attend Stanford this fall, where he will compete in track and field for the Cardinal.
